Principal of St. Pauls Primary, Mrs. Sandra Small-Thompson, said the Matthew’s performance was indicative of the hard work he and the other 80 students put in during the lead up to this year’s examination:
“The overall results were quite pleasing. An example of this being the fact that more than half of the 81 students to sit the examination this year scored between 80 and 100 in Mathematics. We are certainly elated to have achieved these types of results and look forward to even better performances next year.”
Mrs. Roach also applauded the performance of the students and reaffirmed Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages’ commitment to assisting with the continued development of the school:
“When we decided to adopt St. Paul’s Primary we did so knowing how hard the teachers and students worked to achieve great academic results. We therefore sat down with the principal and looked at ways in which we could assist with the development of well-rounded individuals and are very elated with the results they have produced. We remain committed to providing them with as much support as possible in an effort to ensure continued success.”
Earlier this year Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages embarked on a set of activities to support St. Paul’s Primary as part of their decision to adopt the Brittons Hill Cross Road institution. With over 50 parents and guardians accompanying children and staff, the recently held “Numeracy Night” at the St. Paul’s Primary School proved to be equally as entertaining as it was educational for all those attending.
Featuring a variety of challenging, yet fun mathematical activities, the Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages sponsored “Numeracy Night” brought students and their parents together in teams to solve numerous mathematical puzzles developed by the teachers at the school, with an aim to improving all parties’ understanding of mathematics and its everyday application.
Principal of St. Paul’s Primary School, Mrs. Sandra Small-Thompson, indicated that, following Literacy Night which was held last term, many parents asked for a follow-up since the first session had provided so much fun and had allowed the students and parents/guardians to have one-on-one sessions in helpful education activities:
“With tremendous support and assistance from Barbados Yellow Pages and other sponsors, the staff worked feverishly to set up the various activity stations, such as Math-O-Logical, Running Math, Domi-Matics, Math-A-Make-It, Mem-O-Matic and a number of other activities which tested the participants’ mathematical skills and also provided new learning tools. At the end of it all the teachers, pupils and students returned home armed with novel ways of demystifying mathematics and recognizing fascinating methods of mastering numbers.”

“Bashment Granny” (seated right) paid a visit to the school and had the full attention of the students.
At the start of the night each participant was issued with $20 in St. Paul’s currency which bought them chances at the various stations. Additional money could be attained by persons correctly answering a mathematical problem, while time restrictions were imposed on each activity, allowing all attendants to visit each of the stations set out.
Pam Roach, Marketing Manager of Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages, said events such as this are important to the continued development of students and as such Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages is happy to lend its assistance to the school’s endeavours:

“Education must not only be structured, it should also be fun, particularly when dealing with young children who tend to grasp concepts better when the delivery is much more interesting. We therefore fully support any attempts by St. Paul’s Primary to emphasize this approach and look forward to assisting with similar events in the future.”

The new offices of the Diabetes Association of Barbados (DAB) now boast highly visible signage thanks to the donation of a new, double-sided, reflective sign by Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages.

Eric Holder (left), Volunteer with the Diabetes Association of Barbados and Sonia Leuwaisee, Activities Coordinator, are all smiles following the recent erection of their new signage donated by Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages. From all reports, this has already resulted in a greater awareness of the Association and its location.
Recently erected at the DAB’s office located at Beckles Road in St. Michael, it is hoped the signage will assist in raising the profile and visibility of the Association, which has been working assiduously to raise local awareness about the dangers and treatment of Diabetes.
Kenrick Corbin, Public Relations Officer of the DAB thanked Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages for its timely donation:
“When we first moved into our Beckles Road office a few years ago, we had an issue where our sign was only visible from one direction and was easily missed. With this new reflective double-sided sign, key information such as our opening hours and contact numbers are now clearly visible to passersby during the day and at night.”
Pam Roach, Marketing Manager of Global Directories/Barbados Yellow Pages, said this is yet another one of the company’s efforts to assist local associations with the development of their various programmes:
“With recent statistics indicating 15.6 per cent of Barbadians over age 25 are diabetic, the DAB provides an invaluable service to over 30,000 affected by the disease in Barbados. We are extremely pleased to be able to offer them assistance through the provision of new signage and encourage the organisation to continue its good work.” |
(CNS): The only safe house in the Cayman Islands that offers sanctuary to women and children at risk of domestic violence and sexual assault is being renovated with the help of local sponsors. The charity makes good use of the current space as some 16 beds are housed in the three bedroom bungalow which has two bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a dining area, and a laundry room as well as the charities offices. Allison Clark the fundraising committee chair said aside from providing shelter the home needed to provide hope and as such the renovation was important. From 1 January to 31 December 2011 the centre received 131 crisis calls and sheltered 30 women and 35 children, including providing them with meals, clothing and other daily essentials.
"While providing a safe place that offers shelter from abuse is our primary objective, we also believe that the Crisis Centre should be comforting, welcoming and a place of hope, inspiration, and healing and the home was in need of some basic upgrades,” said Clark.
Global Directories, publishers of the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages, is a major sponsor of the Cayman refurbishment project that is due to start this week. “We are grateful to organisations like the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages that help us to realise our vision of providing light and optimism in the lives of these people who need it most,” Clark added.
Eileen Keens, Market Manager of Global Directories said the firm was delighted to support the work of the Centre. “Their efforts to end domestic and sexual abuse continue to make a tremendous difference in many lives and have also helped raised community awareness about prevention and intervention through their various programmes".

JAMAICA Yellow Pages, last week appointed two Kingston-based students as brand ambassadors, having reviewed nearly 300 entrants in a recently-concluded 'Get Discovered' Facebook competition. The students are 18-year-old Joel Nomdarkham of Kingston College, and 24-year-old Christol Wilson, of the University College of the Caribbean (UCC).
The 'Get Discovered' competition ran for a month on Facebook and saw young persons from all across Jamaica vying for a change to be 'the face' of Jamaica Yellow Pages.
During the period, the Jamaica Yellow Pages fan-base among the 18-44 age groups grew from 1,113 to 8,057.
After screening process with an interview panel comprising representatives of the Jamaica Yellow Pages, Joel and Christol were selected as the winners, receiving cash prizes, an iPod Nano, iTunes gift certificate and participate in new "Find and Discover" advertising campaign for the print and electronic media.
The two students were acknowledged during a brief ceremony at the Kingston College Melbourne Campus on Elleston Road in Kingston last week.
During the presentation, Jamaica Yellow Pages marketing manager, Cecelia Bell, said the competition arose from a need for the company to appeal to a younger segment of users with its print and online products. Jamaica Yellow Pages is available online and via the cellphone at Jamaicayp.com.
"We are seeking to remain relevant and applicable to the lifestyle of both mature and younger users," she pointed out adding that social media was an exceptional way to connect with young people. Bell commended both winners and presented them with tokens of appreciation. Also participating was general sales manager, Jessica Campbell.
KC's acting principal Everton Burrell said that Joel's success in the competition came as no surprise, as he was a model student, who excelled at whatever he did. Other faculty members shared the same sentiments, and added that they were confident that both winners would be great Ambassadors for the Jamaica Yellow Pages.
In her acceptance speech, Christol expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Jamaica Yellow Pages, and plans to use a portion of her prize money to assist her feeding programme for the needy. In addition, Joel also announced his plans to donate a part of his winnings to the development of school projects.
The winners are featured in the January-February issue of the Buzz entertainment and lifestyle magazine. |
