History reveals that the islands were originally called ‘Las Tortugas’ (turtles, in Spanish) by Christopher Columbus who discovered the islands in 1503. However they were later renamed by Sir Francis Duke in 1586 when he visited the islands, taking the Caribbean word for crocodile ‘camanas’ and logging Cayman as the official name.
